Why good lighting matters

Light determines how you live, work, and relax. With the right fixtures, you can prevent shadows, create warmth on the sofa, and focus in your workspace. Think in layers: basic light for orientation, task light for reading or cooking, and accent light to highlight art, plants, or texture.

Choosing what works

  • Pendant lamp - Above the dining table, the shade usually hangs 60 to 75 cm above the tabletop. For a long table, 2 or 3 more compact shades work more evenly than one large one.
  • Floor lamp - Ideal next to the sofa or armchair. An arc lamp brings light above the seating area without extra ceiling points. Use a dimmer for movie nights.
  • Table lamp - On a dresser, bedside table, or desk. A shade height of approximately 40 to 60 cm provides soft, non-glaring light at eye level.
  • Wall lamp - Perfect in hallways and stairwells. Direct the light upwards for spaciousness or downwards for atmospheric wall-wash.

  • Minimalist - Slim lines and matte finish for a calm look.
  • Industrial - Metal and grid shades for sturdy accents.
  • Classic and Hotel Chic - Glass, textile shades, and brass for a rich glow.
  • Scandinavian and Japandi - Wood, paper, and ceramics for warm diffused light.

Light source and ambiance

  • Color temperature - 2200 to 2700K for living room and bedroom, 3000K for kitchen and home office.
  • Brightness - Recommended value per lamp: 150 to 300 lumens for accent, 400 to 800 lumens for a table lamp, 800 to 1200 lumens for a dining table.
  • Color rendering - Choose CRI 90 or higher so that materials and skin tones appear natural.
  • Smart and dimmable - Dimmable or smart lamps allow you to quickly switch between task lighting and evening mode.
